Microplastics and Nanoplastics Are a Global Environmental and Health Challenge: Dr. Michael Bank emphasized that plastic pollution is part of the interconnected triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, with millions of tonnes of plastic entering the environment annually and affecting thousands of species worldwide. He stressed that addressing plastic pollution requires action across the entire plastic lifecycle, including production, use, and disposal.

Chemical Pollution and Plastic Contamination Are Highly Complex and Interconnected: Dr. Michelle Bloor highlighted that ecosystems are exposed to vast numbers of chemicals and complex “chemical cocktails,” including microplastics, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, and industrial contaminants. She explained how rivers serve as pathways for these pollutants and how climate-driven flooding can redistribute contaminants across ecosystems, creating risks for biodiversity, food systems, and human health.

Nanoplastics Research Can Build on Decades of Nanoparticle Science: Dr. Halshka Graczyk demonstrated that many concepts from nanoparticle research—including toxicological pathways, exposure assessment methods, and risk governance approaches—can inform nanoplastics research. However, she stressed that nanoplastics are distinct from engineered nanoparticles due to their greater diversity, degradation patterns, chemical additives, and environmental interactions.

Standardized Methods, Collaboration, and Capacity Building Are Essential: All three speakers emphasized the urgent need for harmonized terminology, standardized monitoring and testing methods, interdisciplinary collaboration, and stronger capacity-building efforts. During the discussion, Dr. Bank highlighted international initiatives such as the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme and other capacity-building efforts supporting countries, including those in Africa, in addressing microplastic pollution.

Policy Development Should Advance Alongside Scientific Research: A recurring message from all speakers, particularly Dr. Halshka Graczyk, was that policymakers should not wait for perfect scientific certainty before taking action. Existing frameworks—including the Basel Convention, the Global Framework on Chemicals, emerging science-policy mechanisms, occupational safety standards, and national regulatory systems—already provide opportunities to reduce risks while scientific understanding continues to evolve.
